My Secret World

There are many things I don’t like about having to live a double life as both Writer and Worker in Corporate America, chief among them being having to split my time between both occupations.

But there’s one thing that I absolutely love about it.

During lunch today, I set up at my small work table with my laptop, a cup of my favorite tea, and my mp3 player. I could just barely hear the noise of the office over the songs of my writing playlist: the commotion from the visit of a cubicle neighbor’s baby, the ever-present din of the printer/copier, the laughter from a conversation between three of my coworkers, people coming back and forth from the cafeteria.

And through it all, I was deep in the jungles of Nicaragua watching a moonlit chase between a jaguar and a spider monkey who spend their days in human form.

I love having the inhabitants of a secret, magical world living out their lives behind my eyes while the most ordinary events of Corporate America take place all around me. It makes me feel like Superman walking around as Clark Kent.

I can’t wait until I can write full time, but I will miss having my undercover identity a little bit. There’s something wonderfully exotic about keeping the secret of my secret world.
