Opening lines

So... thanks to a link from phoenixfirewolf, I've entered the first paragraph of a new WIP in a contest on agent Nathan Bransford's blog. There are, like, a thousand entries--yikes! The finalists will be chosen by Nathan and revealed Friday, then there will be some kind of voting for the winner. The prize is a partial crit by Nathan. Eeeeee! I'd be happy just to make it to the finalists round. To clarify, my entry is not from the book I'm revising now. It's from the next novel I'll be working on--all new characters in an all new world. I can't wait to get started!

Here's my entry--wish me luck!

“I want the bastard to pay.”

The caller’s anger, though sincere, was too routine to stir a response in me. Every time I picked up the phone, it was like playing a game of Mad Libs: “I want the _____(male/female derogatory term) to pay for _____(expletive) _____(verb) me and I want _____(male/female pronoun) to pay now.” But then, I guess that’s what happens when you sell revenge for a living.

What are some of your favorite first paragraphs or first lines?
