Book Reviews: Bone Crossed and Unfallen Dead

Apologies for the crazy delay on posting these.

Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs

(Have I mentioned how much I love this cover art??)

Excerpt from inside cover:
Marsilia, the local Vampire Queen, has learned that Mercy crossed her by slaying a member of her clan--and she's out for blood. But since Mercy is protected from direct reprisal by the werewolf pack (and her close relationship with its sexy Alpha), it won't be Mercy's blood Marsilia is after.

It'll be her friends'.

Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series is one of my all time favorites and this latest installment doesn't disappoint. There is good, realistic growth in Mercy's relationships, most notably with Adam and Stefan. (Separately. Together would have been a whole different novel by a whole different author...) The main plot focuses pretty heavily on Stefan and I loved getting to spend so much time with him. Briggs does a fantastic job of putting him in a terrible situation and the moment when the hows and whys are revealed is nothing short of heartbreaking. Go! Buy! Love!

Unfallen Dead by Mark Del Franco

From Mark's website:
Samhain, the night when the veil fades between this world and the afterlife, and the dead of Faerie walk the earth.

Connor Grey's not interested.

Not when he finds himself fending off a Queen of Faerie intensely interested in his involvement in a recent near-apocalypse. Not when Dylan macBain, his old partner at the Guild, stirs memories of the past he? rather forget. And not when a homeless man turns up dead with druidic runes slashed across his forehead, and no one cares outside the Boston neighborhood of the Weird.Connor must decide whether to trust his friends—or his enemies—a decision that will leave his life and the fate of the Seelie Court itself hanging in the balance.

Not to sound like a broken record, but this is another of my favorite series. I think it's very well rounded - lots of action, lots of character development. Light on the romance, but I'm kept more than happy by all the other, richly developed plot elements. I think Mark does a great job of developing Connor's character throughout the series and Unfallen Dead was no exception. We see more growth, more of Connor pivoting away from his past and embracing his future -- all the while remaining very much Connor. Well done! And this man can write a battle scene like nobody's business. Damn! The only thing I'll caution you about is any other plans you may have once you start reading--it's really hard to put down. Go! Buy! Love!
