Book review: TWILIGHT'S DAWN by Anne Bishop

Twilight's Dawn (The Black Jewels, #9)Twilight's Dawn by Anne Bishop

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This collection of 4 novellas is the for-now conclusion to the excellent Black Jewels series. Each novella works as a standalone story but they also pull together to give the collection a novel-like feel.

There has been quite a mixture of opinions on these stories, particularly the last story, because some beloved characters die. In my opinion, the story is beautifully told and is a perfect ending to the epic tale I spent so many wonderful hours with over the past few years. I have seen authors make the mistake of trying to carry on a series forever and I respect Ms. Bishop for pulling this one to a close when it felt right to her. The series is ended in a way that leaves room for her to revisit the world again, if she chose, but gives the reader a healthy sense of closure.

If anyone watched the show Six Feet Under all the way through, this book reminded me of that show's finale. Not to say that we got to see how all the characters died--that was the right ending for Six Feet Under because of the nature of the show. But Ms. Bishop gave us a glimpse into each character's future so that we have some sense of closure--either how they will continue living or, in some heartbreaking cases, how they died.

Excellent.

Thank you! I've read some pretty mean reviews about this book but I thought it was great!
