Book Review: Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs

Cry Wolf
by Patricia Briggs is a follow up novel to the short story “Alpha and Omega”, found in the On the Prowl anthology. Both stories take place in the fantastic world of Briggs’s excellent Mercy Thompson series (Moon Called, Blood Bound, Iron Kissed and the forthcoming Bone Crossed – I’ve provided convenient Amazon links to all of them here, in case you don’t already own them, because you really should. Trust me. And, hey - if you throw in Cry Wolf and/or On the Prowl, you can get free Super Saver shipping!)

Cry Wolf follows Charles, the head werewolf’s weapon and son, and Anna, a rare Omega werewolf, as they hunt down a rogue who turns out to be much more. Picking up where “Alpha and Omega” left off, Charles and Anna are trying to navigate their complicated relationship: their wolves have mated and left their human halves to tag along, just the opposite of what usually happens. Add to that Anna’s struggle to overcome years of constant abuse, a richly written pack member named Asil whose past has come back to haunt him, and a newly turned werewolf who was wrestling with his own demons before he was Changed, and you’ve got yourself a good read.

Fans of the Mercy Thompson series will enjoy this book. I haven’t read “Alpha and Omega” – didn’t, in fact, realize it existed until I was nearly done with the book. Cry Wolf can be easily read without it, but you definitely get the sense that you missed the early part of Anna's and Charles's story.
