I think I was unnecessarily intimidated by the choreography of the scene. I'd only written one previously (I've skipped all the others in this book so far--eek!) and my husband, who has a black belt, helped me block it out and actually physically role played it with me enough times that I felt like I knew what it physically felt like to be on both sides of the action.
I love the way that scene turned out, but I attributed its success to Ben's intimate knowledge of all things fighting. I never thought I'd be able to dream one up by myself. In all fairness, I haven't given part one to him for beta reading yet. So, for all I know it either completely sucks or is completely unrealistic. But I don't think so. I think it's a good start, at least. Part two will be even more fun (bigger scene! more bad guys! shinier weapons!) and I've been positively giddy about writing it all day. Even though I didn't quite make it there tonight, I'm happy the anticipation will carry me into tomorrow's writing session.
Oh! I have another confession to make. *hunches* I've been a terrible fan. I completely overlooked the release of Marjorie M. Liu's latest Dirk & Steele novel, THE LAST TWILIGHT! Marjorie M. Liu is a great source of inspiration for me. She weaves together breathtaking prose with intriguing plots, edge-of-your-seat action and the intermingling of people's lives that break your heart and soothe it back together all in the same breath. She takes the time to post interesting and inspiring stories, quotes and articles on her blog and is a wellspring of advice for other writers. If you haven't read any of her novels, I recommend starting with Tiger Eye, the first in the Dirk & Steele series. Technically speaking, Dirk & Steele are Paranormal Romances, but they're so action-forward they definitely blur the lines between PR and Urban Fantasy. Still, if PR isn't your thing, pick up the short story anthology Wild Thing and check out her story Hunter Kiss. It's the opening to her new Urban Fantasy series and it's to die for. Big fan. Big, big fan.
So, in conclusion: go now and buy The Last Twilight and, well, any other darn book from Ms. Liu's catalog you don't already own. I promise you won't be disappointed.
