Win a copy of The Iron Witch!

Some of the snow and ice melted this weekend! We knocked icicles off our roof! Hooray! Let's give something away!

FREAK. That’s what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. Donna’s own nearly fatal injuries from the assault were fixed by magic—the iron tattoos branding her hands and arms. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane and grounded is her relationship with her best friend, Navin Sharma.

When the darkest outcasts of Faerie—the vicious wood elves—abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend—even if it means betraying everything her parents and the alchemist community fought to the death to protect.

Alchemy's all about transformation and the search for eternal life. Leave a comment by the end of the day Friday telling me what you'd do with all your extra time if you found the secret to eternal life, and I'll randomly pick one winner to receive a copy of the US edition of THE IRON WITCH. Open to anyone, anywhere.

Friday Five

1. Have I mentioned that I'm reading THE IRON WITCH by BFF Kaz? And that it's really good?

2. Are you on Goodreads? I'd love it if you friended me! I signed up to do a reading challenge there - 52 books this year. I'm a little behind schedule, thanks to Diana Gabaldon's tome DRAGONFLY IN AMBER, but I'm hoping to catch up soon.

3. Thanks to everyone who provided snow removal advice. Tomorrow morning I'll be climbing snow piles and attempting to push them around. Perhaps pictures will follow...

4. We watched this really interesting National Geographic documentary called The Science of Dogs. It's all about eugenics and how humans have spent centuries trying to perfect various breeds for various purposes -- like detecting cancer by smelling (fer realz--so cool!) and a man in Russia who has created HIS OWN BREED OF DOGS by mating dogs and jackals to create incredibly, outrageously reliable bomb-sniffing dogs for use with airport security. 45 minutes - highly recommended. Available via Netflix streaming.

5. Tomorrow night I'm going to a vegetarian restaurant for dinner. What luxury! Woo! An ENTIRE MENU to choose from! No modifications! No worrying that I am accidentally ingesting unwanted animal products! Feelings of love and goodwill for all!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Guess what arrived today?

My copy of Karen Mahoney's (a.k.a. Kaz, The Kaz(tm), Kazzy, BFF Kaz) THE IRON WITCH!!!

The cover is even more gorgeous in person. Also? There are swirlies on the inside of the cover. Awesome! And I learned what Kaz's mom's name is. I've only known her as Mum. See? You get ALL THIS in addition to an exciting story.

No, but seriously. I read an early draft and it's really great. Official release date in the US is tomorrow (already out in the UK).

Friday Five

1. Holy crap, it's cold. Do you think I can get away with wearing my mountain lion hat in the office? Hmm...
2. Kaz has posted a link to a 19 picture Vanity Fair slideshow of Johnny Depp. Updside? It's 19 pictures of the beauty that is Johnny Depp, primarily photographed by the unbelievable talent that is Annie Liebowitz*. Downside? He's smoking in most of them.
3. THIS IS A SECRET. Ssssh. Don't tell anyone. *looks around* I don't have any plans this weekend. I'm going to spend the whole blessed weekend locked in my house like a hermit, pretending the rest of the world largely doesn't exist and working on revisions. OH, DEAR GOD, THE JOY. :D
4. I am super psyched about the work I'm doing on revisions. I don't think I ever knew how to properly revise a book before. Maybe it was first book syndrome (a.k.a. ZOMG, the Preciousssss) or maybe I've just learned some things. But I think I'm actually making a difference in what I'm doing here. Very, very exciting work. I don't even hate the revisions process! (Yet.)
5. I feel another vlog coming on. Possibly one while wearing the mountain lion hat. Stay tuned...

*I have long suspected that Annie Liebowitz possesses seekrit magical powerz that allow her to capture True Portraits of people. When this news finally breaks for real, remember: you heard it here first.
