I re-read an old journal of mine last night. It was an interesting experience in many ways but one of the things I was most conscious of were the differences in my writing style in the various entries. Sometimes it was obvious that I was trying to Make Pretty Werdz and, honestly, the writing was better when I was just writing from my heart and not worrying about making it sound good. It was clear in the entries with the best writing that I was only focused on using the right words to succinctly convey the thoughts and emotions I was feeling.
It was a great checkpoint. In today's TLOS writing sessions, I made sure I kept things simple and that I was getting to the heart of the matter with the words I was using -- even if they weren't the most shiny, frou-frou, isn't-this-sentence-purty choices.
