Do you ever come up with a line that just perfectly captures what you were trying to say...only it's completely wrong for the character who needs to say it? Damn, I hate that.
This basically falls under the heading of "kill your darlings" but it's so hard to do--especially when it's a struggle to come up with something equally succinct.
In this case, I have my 16 year old main character saying to herself, "Except that’s not really true anymore, is it? The life you want now is made of more than just the quieting of your old fears."
That second line absolutely, utterly, perfectly captures what I'm trying to say. But I'm pretty sure there isn't a 16 year old on the planet who talks like that. *facepalm*
Goodbye, darling.
