Japan

Many people have been asking me if I went to any of the affected areas when I was in Japan in October.

We spent most of our time in Tokyo (middle right of map) and Kyoto (middle left of map). Tokyo has been impacted by the earthquake--they're still having aftershocks there. We did also spend a night in Aizu-Wakamatsu which, as you can see above, is a little more than halfway between Tokyo and Sendai (top of map), the area that has been devastated by the tsunami. Aizu is too far inland to have been affected by the tsunami, I think, though I'm sure it was hit hard by the earthquake.

I am so saddened by this destruction. I cannot possibly imagine what it's like for the people in the affected areas. Please consider donating to the Red Cross (which is both on site in Japan and also donating funds to the Japanese Red Cross Society) or to another organization that will be assisting Japan and its people with their recovery. They have a long, difficult road ahead of them and desperately need whatever you can spare--even if it's just $5.
