A word count and then a read through

I've just printed out my story (all 107 double spaced pages of it) and I'm going to devote my writing time this week to a read through. I haven't done one yet. I think the most I've gone back through is the progress I wrote during the previous day. Oh, and I did read all the way through one chapter at one point because I had to rewrite it. I've got all these changes I need to make and things I need to layer in swirling around in my head and I feel like I'm going to start losing track of them if I don't take a little break and get some of them down on paper.

This read through will be an exercise in discipline because my purpose is not to clean up language (that's for a later revision). But that's soooooooooooo what I'm gonna want to do. My only job right now is to tell the true story. That is my mantra. So all I'm reading for is flaws in telling the true story. Ways to tell the true story better. I'm an obsessive proofreader and it really will be challenging not to purty it up while I'm in there. That's part of the reason why I've forced myself not to do a read through all this time.

While grabbing tonight's word count meter, I was reminded that it's almost NaNo time! NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month (also known as November). The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel from scratch between November 1-30. Yes, that's right. Many, many words a day. The official rules are that the project must be completely encapsulated within the 11/1-11/30 timeframe. For example, writing 50K on The Gatherer wouldn't count since it's a project I started prior to NaNo and a project longer than 50K. I plan on doing my own, customized version of it: 30,000 words in 30 days. I need to get back on track with my writing progress and there's no better time to do it than when the writing community at large is brimming with support for word count, word count, word count!

So...anyone interested in joining me, either with the official rules, my rules or a variation all your own?

I'll join you in November for something like this. 30K in 30 days should be do-able, but I'll muse on this for a little while first. I need to make sure I know which project I'm going to devote the time and energy to..

Great idea, though! Make NaNo your own. :)
