Warning: Lord of the Rings geekery follows.
I recently re-watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy (a.k.a. some of the greatest movies of all time) and something Gandalf said in Fellowship really hit home:
There are many powers in this world, for Good or for Evil. Some are greater than I am. And against some I have not yet been tested.
At first I thought, "Cool! Gandalf and I are working on the same story!" As it turns out, though, Gandalf was talking about a particularly nasty demon called a Balrog.
This picture of Gandalf facing down the Balrog is how I feel about the book I'm writing. Because oh, it is most definitely something against which I have not yet been tested. Like Gandalf, I am staring up at this vastly powerful thing that seems determined to conquer me...and I'm wondering if I have the knowledge and skill to conquer it, instead.
If I was to, say, beat this metaphor to death, I'd tell I you I was standing on the bridge in Moria waving my staff around and shouting, "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" But, as we all know, that was only the beginning of Gandalf's battle with the beast...
